Part 2 - Amanda Murphy Bernina Diamonds Quilt Sew Along

Welcome back

It's now time for part 2 of our Amanda Murphy Design Diamonds Quilt Sew Along.

I hope you had fun choosing your fabrics or if you purchased a kit though us I hope it has arrived. If not it should be getting close.

Did you have a look at the rulers and feet? Have you got yours out of the pack and started to test them? We do still have a little stock left if you didn't get up to doing this. I have added the links to the bottom of the page if you need them.

This week we focus on cutting and piecing.

Cutting

Here are the piecing instructions for download:

Here is a video

For the written instructions and pattern go to:

Fabric A

If you have our kit we "fussy cut" the top and bottom borders. We found this easiest to work from the selvedge sides. We started by overcutting them not cutting them try to width. We wanted to ensure we got the correct placement of the flowers and the vines so that they were similar on the top and bottom.

If you have the kit that we have made up with the Anna Maria Feature print this is how we cut the diamonds in the middle to get the print to look the best

We used a 9.5 inch square ruler.

We have these in stock if you would like one. Please phone on 02 9522 2340 as they are not listed on the website.

When you are cutting the two 9.5 x 5 inch rectangles for the sides of the centre row you need to consider the angle of the flowers you have cut for the centre squares.

I will post separate photos and a blog in this.

Fabric B

The background cutting is not difficult and as the fabric is non directional it is pretty straight forward using the pattern.

Fabrics C and D

These are the chevron each side of the middle.

These are both the pinks in our kit.

The cutting instructions are clear.

Fabric E

This is the binding. We have used the same as the top and bottom borders. Again the pattern instructions as good and clear.

Fabrics F, G, H and I

These are the coloured squares on point in the top and bottom rows. These are cut as per the pattern.

Piecing

Ever wondered what 1/4 inch foot was best to use when piecing a quilt? This video takes you through the different options to help you make the right choice. Bree gives us a run though of the various Bernina 1/4 inch feet here. She looks at the different styles and which to use on your machine and why.

Here are the threads Amanda uses

These are Aurafil threads and we have made a list in store if you need / want to purchase any of these

We use this in the same way that Amanda uses the stilleto to hold the fabric feeding into the foot

Practise

If you wanted to purchase one of these panels that Amanda has designed we do have a couple in store. They are approximately 60cm wide by WOF (110-115cm wide)

To purchase the feet and rulers, here are some links

Tula Pink Hardware

We have a little of this left. We do also have a couple of the cutting mats in store at the time of writing this. They are not on the website as they are difficult to mail. If you would like to check mat stock and mailing fee please phone the shop on 02 95222340 and we are happy to do this for you.
